Here’s the premise of the story:

Disfigured army officer Nicholas Anstruther doesn’t want the responsibility of a ward. He’s a single man and has no prospect of finding a wife. Then he meets his ward’s charming teacher.

Jane Mortimer has been threatened with dismissal if she doesn’t convince Meg’s new guardian to let the little girl remain at dreadful Miss Pugh’s Academy—a predicament for which she can see no answer.

Convinced that the solution to his problem is simple, Nicholas just needs to convince Jane that it will solve her problem too.

I won’t spoil the story by revealing everything, but rest assured, there is a happy ever after.
